Why was my Cleva Classic Card declined? ❌

All you need to know about why your Cleva Classic Card payment may be declined and what to do next.

Written by Glory

Your Cleva Classic Card payment may be declined for different reasons. Check the possible causes below before trying the payment again.

Insufficient balance

Your Cleva Classic Card spends directly from your USD wallet. If your available USD balance is not enough to cover the transaction, the payment will be declined.

  • Check your available USD balance.

  • Make sure you have enough funds to cover the full transaction amount.

CVV match failed

A CVV match failed decline means the security code entered during the payment does not match what you have on your Cleva Card.

The CVV is the three-digit security code attached to your card.

  • Make sure there are no typing errors.

  • If your card details are saved on the merchant's website or app, confirm that the saved card details are correct.

Card is frozen

Your card cannot be used for payments while it is frozen.

  • Go to “Cards”.

  • Check the status of the card.

  • If it is frozen, tap “Unfreeze”.

  • Complete the required authentication, then try the payment again.

Card is terminated

A terminated card can no longer be used to make payments.

If your card has been terminated, continuing to retry the transaction with that card will not work.

Your spending limit is too low

Your payment may be declined if the transaction amount is higher than the spending limit you have set for the card.

  • Tap “Cards”.

  • Tap “More”.

  • Tap “Spending limit”.

  • Adjust your limit as needed:

    • Minimum: $1

    • Maximum: $3,000

The merchant or transaction type is not supported

Some card payments may be declined based on the merchant's Merchant Category Code (MCC).

An MCC (Merchant Category Code) is a four-digit code used by card networks to classify a business based on the type of goods or services it provides.

If the merchant falls under a category that is not supported for Cleva Card payments, the transaction may be declined even when your balance and card details are correct.

What should I check before trying the payment again?

  • Check that you have enough funds in your USD wallet.

  • Confirm that the CVV, expiration date and billing address entered are correct.

  • Check that your card is not frozen.

  • Confirm that your card has not been terminated.

  • Check that the transaction is within your card spending limit.

  • Check whether the merchant or transaction type may be unsupported.

  • Avoid repeatedly retrying the same transaction without first checking the decline reason.
